The evolution of AI conversations: A quick guide to Prompt Engineering

The way we interact with AI has evolved dramatically, much like how our internet search habits transformed from basic keywords to sophisticated queries. Today's challenge isn't just about getting an answer - it's about getting the right answer in the most useful format. So there is an art to Prompt Engineering! Read the blog to find out more.

The way we interact with AI has evolved dramatically, much like how our internet search habits have transformed from basic keywords to sophisticated queries. Today's challenge isn't just about getting an answer; it's about getting the right answer in the most useful format. So there is an art to Prompt Engineering!

Let's explore how to master this art across different AI platforms

Different platforms, different approaches

Just as each person has their own communication style, each AI platform has its unique characteristics:

  • ChatGPT tends to excel at creative writing and coding tasks
  • Claude often provides more detailed analytical responses and excels at nuanced understanding
  • Bard/Gemini particularly shines at real-time information processing and visual tasks.

Think of these platforms as different expert consultants - you wouldn't ask a graphic designer and a data analyst the same question in the same way...

The secret weapon: Meta-prompting

One of the most powerful techniques in prompt engineering is what is referred to as 'meta-prompting': using AI to help improve your prompts. For example, I often end my prompts with: "Please feel free to ask me any questions to improve the accuracy, conciseness and human-sounding tone of the finished content." This simple addition turns the AI from a passive responder into an active collaborator.

Core strategies that work across all platforms

  • Context is king:
Don't just ask a question - set the stage. Instead of "Write a business email," try "Write a business email to a potential client who expressed interest in our software services during last week's tech conference."
  • Layered instructions:
Break complex requests into clear components:
    • Specify your goal
    • Define the desired format
    • Indicate any constraints
    • Request specific examples if needed
  • Iterative refinement:
Think of your first prompt as a rough draft. Use the AI's response to refine your next prompt, creating a dialogue that progressively improves the output.

The power of platform-specific prompting

Each AI platform responds differently to certain prompt styles:

  • ChatGPT: Responds well to role-playing scenarios ("Act as a...")
  • Claude: Excels with detailed analytical frameworks and step-by-step instructions
  • Bard/Gemini: Works best with direct questions and real-world context
Pro Tip: Keep a 'Prompt Library'

Just as we once kept cheat sheets for keyboard shortcuts, maintain a collection of your most effective prompts for each platform.

Include:

  • Your go-to frameworks
  • Successful prompt patterns
  • Platform-specific variations

The future of prompting

As AI models evolve, Prompt Engineering is becoming more about having meaningful conversations than following rigid formulas. The key is learning to communicate your intent clearly while allowing the AI to leverage its strengths.

Practical exercise

Try this: Take your next AI task and submit it to different platforms using platform-optimized prompts. Notice how the responses differ and use these insights to build your prompt library.

Remember: Effective Prompt Engineering isn't about finding a perfect formula – it's about developing a communication style that works for your specific needs and the AI platform you're using.

Your turn: What are your go-to prompts? How do you adapt your approach across different AI platforms? Share your experiences and let's learn from each other.
